College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
We are training the next generation of leaders in the sciences and mathematics, preparing them to be collaborative critical thinkers who combine classroom knowledge with hands-on research experience to ask and answer complex questions.
Distinctions
NSM faculty members are annually awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in external funding from federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy via a highly competitive peer review process.
For its mentoring and outreach success, the American Mathematical Society awarded CSUF’s Department of Mathematics its 2022 Award for “Mathematics Programs that Make a Difference.”
NSM offers multiple scholar training programs, including the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training Program, known as MHRT, and the Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement, known as U-RISE.
Why Choose College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Led by esteemed faculty researchers, CSUF offers a wide range of scholarships and department-based fellowships that support undergraduate research on such topics as climate change, gravitational waves, mathematics education and Alzheimer’s disease.
CSUF’s diverse and dedicated students harness interdisciplinary resources and experiences in the field, laboratory and research centers to explore their passions and create new scientific knowledge in their fields.
Participating in cutting-edge research alongside faculty mentors, CSUF students enjoy careers as geoscientists, field biologists, pharmacists, chemists, teachers and laboratory technicians, working at such companies as Kaiser Permanente, CVS, Gilead Sciences, Northrop Grumman and Johnson & Johnson.
Hands-On Research
Teams of undergraduate and graduate students pursue research with faculty mentors. Students present their findings at national and international conferences and publish their work in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Real-World Experiences
Whether students are in the classroom, lab or field, they have the tools they need to construct hypotheses, design experiments, collect and analyze data and solve difficult problems.
Teacher Education
Faculty experts provide leadership in the scholarship of teaching and learning, preparing future educators with K-12 teacher preparation programs and coursework.
Modern Labs
The renovated second floor of McCarthy Hall includes new classrooms and teaching labs, faculty research labs, student study spaces and computer labs. Labs and classrooms are stocked with technology and equipment that students use to explore relevant questions and gain hands-on experiences.
Titans in Their Fields
Our students and alumni carry the Titan spirit as they strive to help others and uplift communities.
This requires passion, compassion and dedication. Meet some of our alumni and learn how CSUF prepared them for their calling.
Future Doctor Accepted to 17 Elite Medical Schools
After scoring in the 97th percentile on the MCAT, a biological science alumnus is pursuing a career in medicine at Johns Hopkins University.
Biochemistry Student Targets New Drug Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease
A first-generation college student and aspiring academic researcher is developing therapeutics that are accessible to populations disproportionately affected by disease.
Physics Alumna Launches Career in Space Industry
With experience in gravitational-wave research, an alumna is working as a remote sensing system modeling and simulation specialist for The Aerospace Corporation.
Geology Student Examines Meteorite From Mars
A future geologist conducts chemical analyses on a rare Martian meteorite sample to learn about the red planet’s igneous processes.
